The app log and where it lives
Where the folder is
On macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/@armanos/desktop/logs, on Windows %APPDATA%\@armanos\desktop\logs, on Linux ~/.config/@armanos/desktop/logs.
If the app was started with the --user-data-dir flag, the logs folder lies inside the named directory.
Which files are there
The current file is armanos.log, and when it reaches 5 MB the app starts a new one.
Older files get numbers from 1 to 4, the fifth oldest is deleted, and the log never takes more than 25 MB.
What the log does not hold
Passwords, keys, tokens, cookies and two-factor keys are cleaned out before writing, and a marker stands in their place. A profile's page address is cut down to the site name, and the home folder in paths is written as ~.
Lines about opening and closing a profile carry no profile names, only the profile number and the engine.
The log and a message to support
The Problem report and a message sent with Write to support carry the last 300 lines of the log beside the version and the system. If the message grows too large, it carries fewer lines, but it still goes out.
What this article does not cover
- The log of the profile's own browser. The app writes only its own messages.
- Reading the log line by line. Support reads it for you.
- The app's settings. The log neither stores nor changes them.
Where this is decided
Every statement above is one place in the code and one test.
- Writing, a new file every 5 MB, five files and cleaning of every kind of secret
- apps/desktop/test/журнал-на-диске.js
- The live app: sign-in, a proxy with a password, a 2FA key, cookies, a profile launch, and not one secret in the log or the report
- apps/desktop/test/журнал-без-секретов-живьём.js
- The last log lines in the problem report, cleaned and within the size of a message
- apps/desktop/test/problem-report.js
Questions
- Can the log be deleted?
- Yes, the logs folder can be emptied completely. The app starts a new file with the next message.
- Can a site opened in a profile see the log?
- No. The log is written by the app on this computer, and profiles and sites have no access to it.
- Does the log go anywhere by itself?
- No. It leaves only in a message you send yourself, and only as its last 300 lines.
