Extension updates

The extensions from the Chrome Web Store on the Extensions screen update themselves, and each card can switch that off. The path is Extensions in the left column, then Update automatically on a card, or Check for updates next to the extensions folder.

How it checks

Two minutes after start and then every five hours the app asks the store about all extensions with Update automatically ticked, in one request. Check for updates next to the extensions folder asks at once.

Update automatically is ticked on every store extension by default.

A session from the sync folder saved on another computer by a newer version of an extension than this one has: the app checks for updates right away and a notification names the extension and both versions. An older version may not read the data of a newer one, so update it before you work in this profile.

The same checks as an install

A new version is downloaded, compared with the file hash the store gave, and checked the way an install is: signature, extension number and third generation.

When it lands

A new version does not replace files under an open profile. The card says Version is downloaded and checked, and that it will be installed when the profiles with this extension are closed, with the number open now.

Update to and Reinstall on a card wait the same way while profiles hold the extension. The extension keeps its own saved data across the update.

When it does not land

A version that needs new permissions waits for your consent: the card names the permissions and carries Update. A version that needs a newer browser than this computer has stays out, and the card names both versions.

Your own folder is not updated, since there is nothing to update it from, and the card says so.

What the card says

Each store extension card carries Update automatically and one line about its state.

  • Updated on a date to a version

    The last update that landed.

  • Downloaded and checked

Waits until the profiles with this extension are closed.

  • Needs new permissions

Waits for Update on the card.

  • Needs a newer browser

    The current version stays.

  • Automatic updates are off

The version stays as it is.

What this does not do

  • It does not update extensions installed inside a profile: those are not in the list of the app.
  • It does not install a version with new permissions without your consent.
  • It does not replace an extension under an open profile.

Where this is decided

The claims that carry the most weight, with the stand that checks each of them.

A new version is checked like an install, a swapped file is refused, and nothing is replaced under an open profile
apps/desktop/test/автообновление-расширений.js
On both live engines Check for updates installs the new version, and after a restart it runs with the data of the old one
apps/desktop/test/обновление-расширения-живьём.js
The card shows the checkbox and every state in words
apps/desktop/test/автообновление-окно.js

Questions

How do I keep an extension at its version?
Untick Update automatically on its card. The card then says that automatic updates are off and the version stays as it is.
The store did not answer. What happens?
The message under Check for updates says so, and the next check comes on schedule. Nothing already installed changes.

Try it on your own profiles

The free plan gives two profiles, with no time limit and no card.
