The list of names
The page draws one string in different fonts in turn and measures its width. A font the system lacks gives the width of the fallback, and that is how the list is assembled without a single permission.
Six families with one measure
The word cursive is an errand, not a font: the system has to resolve it. A live machine answers serif, sans-serif, monospace, cursive, fantasy and math with different widths, while a profile of a foreign system often gives four identical ones.
What ARMANOS does
A profile's font list is derived from its number: the platform core plus some of the optional ones, and two profiles differ in list length by themselves.
Generic families for a foreign template are assigned only fonts the profile declares and the machine has.
How to compare two profiles
Open the page in two profiles of different systems. The lists have to differ, and the widths of the six families inside one profile have to be different from each other.
What this check does not show
- The system's full font list. The page asks about a known set of names rather than reading the font directory.
- Web page fonts. Fonts a site loads itself are not part of this list.
- Second font names on macOS. Checking them is described in the post about fonts.
Where this is decided
The readings are measured in your browser, and the promises below are backed by files you can open.
- Readings on the page come from an allowed list
- apps/web/components/site/LiveReadout.tsx
- Generic families for a foreign template are assigned only declared fonts
- apps/desktop/test/generic-fonts.js
- A profile's font list is its own and does not change between launches
- apps/desktop/test/fingerprint-consistency.js
Questions
- Why is my font not in the list?
- The page asks about a set of common names. A font outside the set is not asked about at all.
- What do identical family widths mean?
- The system resolved several families to one fallback font. That is rare on a live machine and common on a profile of a foreign system.
- Is the list sent anywhere?
- No. The widths are measured in your browser.
Two profiles give two different answers
In ARMANOS these values are decided inside the browser engine before the page gets anything. Open two profiles, run the check in both and compare.
