Datacenter proxy

It is the cheap and fast end of the market, and the most honest about itself. The address says it lives in a rack, and a platform that cares about that can tell in one lookup.

A datacenter proxy is an exit address from a hosting network, rented per address for a month rather than per gigabyte of traffic.

Where the address sits

The block is registered to a hosting company, and hosting ranges are catalogued in public lists that anyone can read.

Nothing about this is secret or clever. A site asking whether a visitor came from a server room gets a plain answer.

  • The whole range is known

    Addresses are sold out of a block, so a judgement about the block reaches every address in it.

  • The neighbours are strangers

    Other customers work from the same range, and nothing they do is under your control.

  • It stays the same

    One address for the month, which is what makes the pairing with a clock and a language stable.

What the price buys

A machine in a rack has a large uplink and no metered household line behind it, so sellers charge for the address and not for the bytes.

  • Speed

    The hop to the proxy is short and the line behind it is fat. Pages load about as fast as they do without it.

  • Price per address

    A few dollars a month for one address, against several dollars per gigabyte for a household line.

  • Traffic you stop counting

    Heavy work becomes affordable, which is why data collection lives here rather than on residential supply.

Why platforms weigh it differently

A shop in a small town gets almost no genuine customers from a server room, so the same address means something different to a shop than to an advertiser.

Where hosting traffic is ordinary the address costs you nothing extra. Where it is not, the class is only the beginning and the history of the exact address carries the rest.

Your own server is one of these

A machine you already rent has a hosting address, and reaching a profile through it is an exit that costs nothing extra.

An ordinary tunnel runs beside the profile and the browser sees a real local entrance. A tunnel that drops is raised again on the same port up to three times, and then the profile is told rather than sent out on your own line.

The key file stays on this computer

A path to a private key means nothing on a second machine and sometimes means somebody else's key, so it never travels with the library. The key itself is read by ssh and never by us.

Often confused with

  • ISP proxy

    The same rack, but the address is registered to a consumer provider. That registration is the whole difference in price.

  • Residential proxy

    A real household line, sold by the gigabyte and several times dearer.

  • Mobile proxy

    A carrier address shared with real phones, bought for how often it changes.

  • VPN on a server

    The same kind of address for your whole computer at once, which is the opposite of one exit per profile.

What this does not do

  • It does not disguise where it lives. A hosting range reads as a hosting range, and a cheap address does not become a household one.
  • It does not usually change its address. A change depends on a link from the seller, and an address sold as static comes without one.
  • It does not come with a reputation you can look up. The app measures the country, the city and the response time of your address, and grades nothing.
  • We do not sell proxies. The provider directory inside the app records an intent, takes no payment, and puts nothing into your library by itself.

Questions

Why is a datacenter address so much cheaper?
Because the supply is a rack with a big uplink rather than somebody's home line. Nobody is being paid for the traffic that crosses their own connection.
Will a platform accept one?
That depends on the platform and on the account, and nobody can answer it for you in advance. The class of the address is one signal among many that get read together.
Can I use a server I already rent?
Yes. An entry of the ssh kind raises a tunnel beside the profile and the browser treats it like any other local entrance, with the password kept out of the launch line.
Is a static address a problem for several accounts?
It is the usual way accounts get linked. Two profiles leaving through one address look like one person whatever the fingerprints say.
