Clock and language check

The timezone, clock offset, language list and calendar settings are read by a site without permission and compared with the country of your address. Here you see exactly what it gets.

What a site compares

The timezone and languages come from the browser, while the country comes from the address the request arrived from. A German address with a Kyiv timezone reads as a contradiction inside one visit.

A site reads the language list whole: a live browser carries a base language behind the main one.

Zone name and its offset

The zone name and the offset have to agree with each other. The old and the new name of one zone count as the same: the browser answers with the canonical name, and that is correct behaviour.

What ARMANOS does

A profile takes its timezone and language order from the country of its exit address, not from your machine. The country is asked of four independent sources over a secure connection, and the timezone lands in the profile by itself.

How to compare two profiles

Open the page in two profiles with addresses in different countries. Timezones and languages have to diverge with the countries, while inside one profile the zone name and the offset have to agree.

What this check does not show

  • The country of your address. That is learned from an outside source, and this page makes no outbound requests.
  • Daylight saving. The offset is shown for today, and in winter the same zone has a different one.
  • The language of this page. You chose it in the site menu, and it has nothing to do with the browser's language list.

Where this is decided

The readings are measured in your browser, and the promises below are backed by files you can open.

Readings on the page come from an allowed list
apps/web/components/site/LiveReadout.tsx
A profile's timezone and languages come from the country of its address
apps/desktop/test/fingerprint-consistency.js
The old and the new zone name count as a match in the Fingerprint self-test
apps/desktop/test/audit-on-builtin.js
The exit country is asked of four sources over a secure connection

Questions

Why is the zone written differently from what I chose?
The browser answers with the canonical zone name. For a few zones it differs from the current one, and sites treat that as a match.
Which matters more to a site: zone or language?
Both are read in the first second, and both are compared with the address. A mismatch in either is noticeable.
Are the values sent anywhere?
No. The page reads them from the browser and shows them to you.

Two profiles give two different answers

In ARMANOS these values are decided inside the browser engine before the page gets anything. Open two profiles, run the check in both and compare.
