Connection fields check

A browser describes the connection with a few numbers: latency, speed and kind. On a phone they are joined by fields a desktop lacks, and here you see what your browser hands over.

Your values right now

The values below are read from your browser on this page.

Three numbers and one rule

The browser does not store the kind separately: it derives it from the latency by its own thresholds. The pair «fast kind at high latency» does not occur in a live browser.

The phone fields

The connection type and the speed ceiling are handed over only by a browser on a phone, and a page checks them in one line. A desktop profile without them answers as a desktop, while a phone profile with the host's values gives itself away no less than without the fields.

What ARMANOS does

The kind is derived from latency by the same thresholds the browser itself uses, not drawn by lot. A phone profile gets the fields with its own values, and the speed ceiling is never below the reported speed.

How to compare two profiles

Open the page in a desktop profile and a phone profile. In the desktop one the last two rows have to be empty, in the phone one filled and consistent with each other.

What this check does not show

  • Your network's real speed. The numbers here are what the browser hands a site, not a measurement of the link.
  • Browsers with no connection description. Their rows are empty, and that is a property of the browser.
  • The exit address and the country. A separate check compares those.

Where this is decided

The readings are measured in your browser, and the promises below are backed by files you can open.

Readings on the page come from an allowed list
apps/web/components/site/LiveReadout.tsx
The three phone connection fields open only to the engine that can substitute their values
apps/desktop/test/поля-связи-телефона.js
A phone profile answers with connection fields in a real window
apps/desktop/test/телефон-живьём.js

Questions

Why is the speed so small?
The browser deliberately hands over a rounded and understated number. An exact speed would single you out.
What do empty phone fields mean?
The browser is a desktop one. In a phone browser they are filled.
Are the values sent anywhere?
No. The page reads them from the browser and shows them to you.

Two profiles give two different answers

In ARMANOS these values are decided inside the browser engine before the page gets anything. Open two profiles, run the check in both and compare.
